DEM Party Istanbul MP Cengiz \u00c7i\u00e7ek, speaking at a conference held in Mersin, said that “Abdullah \u00d6calan\u2019s fundamental goal is for the Kurdish people to step through the door of the law.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Association of Lawyers for Freedom (\u00d6HD) Mersin and Adana branches organized a panel titled \u201cThe Right to Hope on the Road to Peace\u201d at the Mersin Yeni\u015fehir Municipality Academy Conference Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the panel\u2019s opening, \u00d6HD Mersin Co-Chair Melek Sarald\u0131 stated that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) considers an aggravated life sentence with no possibility of release to be a violation of rights under the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right to hope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melek Sarald\u0131 said that Turkey has not implemented the ECHR\u2019s ruling finding a violation in \u00d6calan\u2019s case and emphasized that the right to hope is, at the same time, a right to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEM Party Istanbul MP Cengiz \u00c7i\u00e7ek, in his speech, noted that \u00d6calan has been subjected to the harshest isolation and solitary confinement conditions the world has ever witnessed. \u00c7i\u00e7ek stressed that the discussion of the right to hope should not be limited to \u00d6calan\u2019s personal situation but should be addressed in the context of the Kurdish people\u2019s collective struggle for existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entering through the door of law<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA people whose existence has been denied must first have their existential legal status recognized. That is, the acknowledgment of their existence and of their being,\u201d \u00c7i\u00e7ek said, adding that \u00d6calan has adopted an approach that prioritizes the collective rights of his people over his own personal legal status. \u00c7i\u00e7ek emphasized that \u00d6calan\u2019s core aim is \u201cfor the Kurdish people to enter through the door of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c7i\u00e7ek continued: \u201cAbdullah \u00d6calan\u2019s fundamental goal\u2014in his own words, the essential purpose of this 52-year marathon and 52-year struggle\u2014is for the Kurdish people to step through the door of the law. A society, a nation whose existence, name, and very body have been denied\u2014a nation marked as a threat due to its claim to sovereignty and subjected to ideological suppression as an instrument of ideological domination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Systematic isolation and lawlessness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c7i\u00e7ek said that \u201cwhenever Kurds and \u00d6calan are concerned, the entire legal order is shelved.\u201d He added that this situation not as coincidental but as a structural reality that can be explained by the historical choices of the nation-state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the nation-state seeks to eliminate dynamics it perceives as a threat on a legal basis, and the isolation system is nourished by this mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
