Members of the Basel Kurdish People’s Assembly, who took over the Freedom Vigil in Strasbourg, called on European institutions to fulfill their responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Freedom for \u00d6calan Vigil has been ongoing since 2012, demanding an end to the isolation system on \u0130mral\u0131 Island and the physical freedom of \u00d6calan, continues in its 679th week with a new group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vigil is held in Strasbourg, where institutions like the Council of Europe, the CPT, and the European Court of Human Rights are located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vigil is carried out weekly by different groups, all demanding the lifting of the isolation imposed on \u00d6calan and securing his physical freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week\u2019s vigil was taken over by activists Serhat Y\u0131ld\u0131z, Faruk T\u00fcrkhan and Taylan Akdemir from the Kurdish People\u2019s Assembly in Basel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the group, Serhat Y\u0131ld\u0131z greeted Abdullah \u00d6calan and the Kurdish people, stating that they could no longer tolerate the conditions of isolation. He said, \u201cWe demand the freedom of our leader. We call on democratic institutions in Europe to fulfill their responsibilities. The CPT is against us, but the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and the ECHR are behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y\u0131ld\u0131z drew attention to the conflicts in the Middle East and said that they were not taking sides in this war. He remarked that they adopted \u00d6calan\u2019s \u201cThird Way\u201d approach and defended a system in which peoples could live in equality and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y\u0131ld\u0131z stated that they believe the freedom of the peoples of the Middle East, especially the Kurdish people, is linked to the freedom of Abdullah \u00d6calan, and that they will continue their vigil with this belief. He called on the Kurdish people to participate more strongly in the process initiated by the Kurdish leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
